Growl App Reviews

One star

Really this is a 5 star app and worth the price but I opose the slezzyness displayed with your tactics of pushing a paid update on free users without disclosing the price before the uninstall of the free version. I recongnize that software cost money to produce and growl is a cornerstone of mac for most users so its about time you got paid just keep your eyes on your ethics handbook next time your about to jam everyone in the !@#.

Does what it says on the tin!

Particularly good when combined with Prowl to link up with my iOS. As for the $1.99…..its less than a cup of coffee for a useful app. ….and hopefully being in the App Store will help growl get wider support by mainstream companies.

Works great

If you take the time to READ the install instructions which are listed clearly on the website, this app installs just fine.

Useless at the moment

Growl is useless at the moment because most of the programs just dont work with it. I only get notifications for Omnifocus and Dropbox. Thats hardly worth it. Everything else doesnt work. If you have the old version, stick with it. Otherwise wait until this actually does something.

Shave and a hair cut?

Well I cant say Im happy about ti, but really $2 is not all that hard to come by and I *expect* proper and timely updates. I do wonder what you are going to do with all the people who dont have credit cards but want to use Growl?

Downgrading this

Uninstalled. What a piece of carp. Back to version 1.2.2. After the umpteenth notification freezing on my screen I threw it at appzapper and wiped my system clean.

Thanks for harassing me, and then making me BUY an update much appreciated

Your tactics made it look like I had no choice but to buy your update, which for such a simple app should not have been more than .99. Not too happy.

update

I cant update my growl even when I force quit process. Its just stuck.

GrowlMail still not working in Lion. Growl version 1.3.2

I upgraded to the paid version when Lion broke GrowlMail. The paid version does nothing that the free version didnt do, and GrowlMail still doesnt work. Very disappointing, as Mail was the only thing I really wanted monitored.

Great App!

This product is so useful on a dialy basis, one of my fav simple mac apps! 5 stars boys!

It doesn

It doesnt work for me on OS X lion, even though the compatibility notes say it should. I have used Growl before and it worked great on OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard with a 17" Macbook Pro. I recently upgraded to Lion by buying a fresh new computer, a Macbook Air and so I bought Growl on the App Store. But Growl doesnt give me any notifications for my Transmit application (Im running the latest Lion version). Thats also the only app I own on my home computer that seems compatible with Growl out of the box. The preview and settings pages are all configured with defaults and yet I never get a Growl notification using Transmit. So to see if Growl was even working I installed the latest GrowlMail and it sort-of, kind-of works, it does display new messages periodically but sometimes long after theyve come in, so it seems useless for instant notifications which is what I thought Growl as all about. At other times, GrowlMail give me three notifications for the same email. I have no idea why. Im not a newbie user of Growl, Ive used this program for years with earlier versions and never had a problem. It used to be free too. Now it costs money and doesnt work. Ive also installed Growl on two different computers (one for work, one for home) and it doesnt work on the second one either, a Macbook Pro running Lion and the Zimbra application which supports Growl. This same computer fine on Snow Leopard with the free version of Growl. Now there are no notifications from Zimbra at all anymore in Growl, even though it says its running. So Im pretty disappointed. I was going to email the developers to get help but cant be bothered right now to spent hours diagnosing a problem and anyway the website shows a large team effort which is great but I saw no obvious single point of contact for help. I really like support open-source projects which is what Growl used to be, and when I pay for something I expect it to work. So I rate this program 1 star because I bought it and it doesnt work as advertised.

Not sure where the bug lies

Ahile ago I wrote: After its been running for a few minutes, it stops working. All I get is a spinning beachball if I hover over the menubar icon, and Ive yet to actually see a working notification. As it turns out, it only seems to happen with SABnzbd. Ill dig a little more to see if theres a solution, but perhaps this is simply a problem with SABnzbd (although I would hope that Growl should be able to handle an app that doesnt play nice).

Great app - 1.3.2 is broken though

I dont use GrowlMail, but have been using the free, and now paid, version for a long time. Its been great - until 1.3.2 which is broken under Lion. There are many reports, including mine, of this version just hanging and being totally non-functional. The Growl folks are working the issue and hopefully a fixed 1.3.3 will show up soon. Prospective buyers should wait for this to happen. Despite this, I still give this a 5 star rating. I know how tough software development and QA can be and these guys dont deserve to be rated down for one bug which MAY NOT apply to every single user.

Doesnt work with Transmit

Ever since upgrading to the newest version 1.3.x, Growl no longer works with Transmit. Which is the main application I use it for. Theres nothing on the site regarding any potential fixes. Its a great utility, when it works, and a safe bet at $1.99 - so Im not going to complain, however, I do think that people purchasing it to use specifically with Transmit the way that I do, should be made aware of the fact that it isnt going to work. Also, installing the new version of Growl should really just handle the uninstall of the old version itself and not make me have to do all the extra work. Sort that bit out guys.

Also experiencing 100% CPU usage and app hanging

Im on Lion and am experiencing the same issues many others appear to be. Growl is pegging the CPU to 100% and then hanging, causing many other apps to become non-responsive and basically bringing my system to its knees. Very disappointing—Ive been a growl user for many, many years and this is one of the buggiest releases Ive run into yet.

Version 1.3.3 breaks icons using GNTP

I like Growl and dont mind paying a little money to support the project... If youre using Growl with an application or script that requires GNTP to display icons dont upgrade. Version 1.3.3 breaks icons in GTNP. > 1/27/12 12:00:26.081 AM Growl: Not downloading icon for notification success of application Guard Stick with 1.3.2 until this is resolved.

very disappointed

Very poor application support, 1 out of 20 maybe updates and if so gives mostly useless updates. You need to pay extra to get hardware grower, which really should be packaged with the origional. To install Growlmail and others you need to install the free version and take them off of that which… really is stupid and should be coupled. I also had a notification error that caused it to give me 4 notifications for EVERY email. Fuctionality: nice visuals, diffult to get to work, had many errors, Ive now DISABLED IT out of annoyance, though im sure if you put a bunch of effort in it should work correctly. Price: includes nothing out of the box, no application support now, pretty much useless on its own. This version really should be free the way its working. If it was coupled with a working growl mail, hardware-growler then it might be worth it…

Not working for RescueTIme !!!

I use Growl primarily for RescueTime. I waited a few months after installing Lion to install the newest version (the paid version) of Growl, since so many people had problems. No one mentioned a problem with RescueTime, so I finally installed the latest version. Guess what? It doesnt work! Unbelievable! Worse yet, RescueTime just notified me that "Growl isnt installed" and is needed for the Mac to permit alerts. I clicked "install" and it installed the old version. This is crazy. Growl, seriously, you go from free app to paid app and the app doesnt work? This is crazy. Im happy to pay the low cost of the app, I just expect it to work!

Not great..

Now that the app costs money it crashes on me all the time. Never had any problems with the free one, but this one leaves badges on the screen until I go in and relaunch the app. Not sure where they get off charging for something that does not work as well as the free one. Dont waste your money.

No applications?

There are no applications in the preferences pane - zero - why the lack of support? Even after re-installing, skype wont even let you select it through its prefs. This is not a pay-worthy product. Dont bother!!
